Holiday safety - it is a joyous and busy time of the year but there are many potential dangers for our furry friends. To enjoy a happy and safe festive season here are some considerations and reminders to make your home pet safe...

Holiday Dog Safety...

1) Pets like to chew on the Christmas tree if given the chance; keep it secure to avoid accidents. Tree ornaments can be tempting for a doggy. If ingested, items such as tinsel, broken glass, ribbons, bows and wrapping paper can be a definite choking danger.

2) Be sure to spray your electrical cords with a chew deterrent and tape to the walls or floor to avoid chewing.

3) Constant supervision is necessary when candles are lit or the fireplace is on. Animals are attracted to light and the embers, sparks or wax are a potential danger to your buddy.

Holiday Safety - Plants and Products to Watch for...

1) Some snow globes contain antifreeze.

2) Artificial snow is toxic.

3) Poinsettias and holly make great Christmas decorations but for your dog if he should decide that these plants looks like tasty morsels, they could cause stomach problems or eye and mouth irritation.

4) A small amount of Yew is toxic and fatal.

5) Mistletoe if eaten by your dog, could cause a drop in blood pressure, as well as vomiting and swelling of the throat and mouth.

6) Antifreeze is very toxic. Clean up any spills that occur. It tastes sweet but a small amount could be fatal.

Safe Dog Toys

Dogs love to play with toys particularly chew toys. Some dogs will chew them to death. Many of these toys are made from de-isononyl phthalate (DINP) which if ingested by pets, tests results have shown, liver and kidney damage and in some cases cancer. (DINP) is used to make hard PVC plastic flexible and soft. A better and safer alternative when shopping for chew toys are the ones made of latex or rubber. They are also more environmentally friendly.

Safe Holiday Food

Choose healthy dog treats during the holidays and give them in moderation. Be aware that chocolate and macadamia nuts are both toxic to your pet.

The best gift that you can give your four legged friend is some relaxed quality time, which will get the biggest wag of the tail, but do keep holiday safety in mind.
